چکیده

_Two-dimensional imaging modalities have been used in dentistry since the first intra-oral radiograph was taken in 1896. Significant progress in dental imaging techniques has since been made, including panoramic imaging and tomography, which enable reduced radiation and faster processing times. However, the imaging geometry has not changed with these commonly used intraoral and panoramic technologies.

In-office cone beam computerized tomography: technology review and clinical examples.

Computerized tomography (CT) has been utilized in medicine since the early 1970s, but it was not until the late 1980s that it was used in dentistry. The advantages of CT compared with traditional radiographic techniques are numerous, namely, offering a 3-dimensional view with unparalleled accuracy and clinical information. The benefits of this technology have further clinical practicality when ...

CBCT--the justification process, audit and review of the recent literature.

As part of the quality assurance programme in a dental radiology referral centre, the reasons for taking cone beam CT (CBCT) images were analysed and the volume sizes of the field of view (FOV) were noted. Eighty CBCT scans were carried out in the period examined. Implant planning accounted for 40% of the scans, 26% were for assessment of lesions of endodontic origin, 19% for assessing impactio...

Clinical applications of cone-beam computed tomography in dental practice.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems have been designed for imaging hard tissues of the maxillofacial region. CBCT is capable of providing sub-millimetre resolution in images of high diagnostic quality, with short scanning times (10-70 seconds) and radiation dosages reportedly up to 15 times lower than those of conventional CT scans. Increasing availability of this technology provides t...

The Role of Root Canal Preparation on Apical Geometry: A Review of the Literature

The amounts of apical enlargement have been a controversial issue for a long time. The enlargement of the apical part of the canal may severely impact the endodontic prognosis. Enlargement of the apical portion to a larger size may negatively affect the ability to control the filling material during root canal obturation. In addition, an open-apex increases the risk for overfilling which has be...
